Family Session at the Chihuly Bridge of Glass
Downtown Tacoma’s blend of history, glass, steel, and color makes it a dream to photograph. This family session at the Chihuly Bridge of Glass was the perfect mix of urban adventure and heartfelt moments. We didn’t just take pictures—we explored, played, and created memories with the city as our backdrop.
It truly felt like a giant urban adventure—with a camera in hand.
A Peaceful Pause
One spot I was excited to include on our walk was the Japanese Language School Memorial near UW Tacoma, featuring the striking bronze sculpture called Maru. In a wide, open space with soft grasses, stone paths the sculpture provides insight, and balance.
The layout invites movement and curiosity — the kids naturally wandered around, exploring the landscape and architecture. The mix of natural elements and artistic sculptures made it a perfect little pause on our walk, offering a peaceful moment amid the busy city.
A Charming City Street Walk
From there, we strolled down a charming city street, the sound of live music drifting out from cozy restaurants as we walked. We passed inviting cafes, local bookstores, and brick buildings glowing in the evening light. The tree-lined sidewalks filtered with the warm evening light made a magical glow for these adorable shots.
Quick Coffee Break
(Pretend Edition)
We paused at the closed Anthem Coffee storefront for an impromptu “pretend” coffee stop—and got the sweetest smiles and giggles. Nearby, under the Washington State History Museum was a picturesque backdrop with the Glass Museum, I had to pause here for a beautiful and unique shot.
Why I Love Shooting at the Bridge of Glass
The Chihuly Bridge of Glass is more than pretty—it invites play. I love how families interact with the installations: the Seaform Pavilion’s colored glass overhead, the dramatic scale of the Crystal Towers, and the rhythm of the Venetian Wall. There’s something special about the way Tacoma weaves art into everyday spaces—it invites families to explore, connect, and feel something real. We're lucky to call this city home.
Down to the Water
We descended the large staircase at the far end of the bridge, just past the Museum of Glass cone. It felt like entering into a new layer of the city—quiet, reflective, peaceful.
At the waterfront level, we discovered: glass art features and outdoor sculptures, built-in musical instruments that kids couldn't resist, interactive water elements, iconic views of the Tacoma Dome, the marina, Glass Museum cone, and 509 cable bridge
The Takeaway
This location captures the spirit of our city, while also offering a unique and fun experience. Showing that sessions are more about the experience than getting the perfect shot.
If you want a family session that’s full of play, exploration, and adventure- Tacoma’s downtown and the Bridge of Glass might just be the perfect backdrop.
