Every inch of Ft. Steilacoom Park in Lakewood, WA, feels like stepping into a living mood board. From glowing grassy fields and sparkling lakes to cottage-core trails and rustic barns — it’s packed with character. It’s one of those rare places where every direction gives you a totally different feeling, and it’s nearly impossible to capture it all in one session (though trust me, we try).

Moody Magic Meets Golden Light
Meeting this couple at Ft. Steilacoom was a creatives dream. They showed up fully themselves — confident, connected, and absolutely killing it in a stunning black dress (with heels, no less). It’s no secret that light, dusty, and airy sessions are always in demand — but when someone brings edge, I’m all in. The energy- equal parts playful, romantic and cinematic.
Sessions like this are some of my favorite — where we adapt the location and light to match the energy of you. It’s not just about the backdrop, it’s about the mood, the movement, the chemistry.
Wandering Into the Woods & Water
While the fields and barns are what most people know Ft. Steilacoom for, we actually started in a quieter area — shaded woods with filtered sunlight breaking through at the lake just hidden behind the trees. I love to start our sessions with a quiet walk, invoking movement, taking in the scenery, and taking the rare moment to slow down and enjoy the little things in life. We wandered, talked, danced while enjoying a views of the glimmering water.
Golden Grass & sunkissed Moments
Ft. Steilacoom is packed with grassy fields — honestly, we had our pick of spots. The one we settled on was stunning: sun-kissed grass glowing in the light with deep green evergreens standing tall behind them. It’s right along the path leading away from the lake, so the whole scene had this quiet, natural contrast that worked perfectly.
Bold Color Meets Classic Texture at the Barns
Next, we made our way over to the iconic red barns — always a favorite part of Ft. Steilacoom. The contrast between their bold black outfits and the deep rustic red was beautiful. The lines, the texture, the light — it added a sense of mood and depth that was totally different from the softness of the grass and trees.
A Personal Finish: Cars + Open Fields
To wrap up, we headed to a wide open field — partly because the light was still magic, and partly because this couple loves cars, and it felt like the perfect personal detail to include.
The final set of images from this location pulled it all together: warm, rich colors, strong silhouettes, and creative posing with room to play. We leaned into golden hour and kept things simple but striking — which honestly ended up being some of my favorite shots of the evening.
